The Return Of Flared Jeans

Every so often, fashion decides to rescue an element from the past to give it a new twist. This is the case with flared jeans, typical of the 1960s.

Do you remember that this type of piece returned at the beginning of the new millennium? Well, they have done it again. The fashion catwalks during the fall and winter of 2017 were the scene for the return of these pieces, with small adjustments.

For this reason, by the beginning of 2018, the shop windows of clothing stores displayed their mannequins with flared pants. The high cut of the trousers and the wide boot design are maintained. Only the sewing details have been adjusted to highlight the figure, in general.

The return of a fashion

The return of a fashion

Flared jeans were created by English fashion designer Mary Quant in the 1960s. This designer also pushed the miniskirt during this decade, marking a historic trend.

Already in the 70s, the bell boot was not missing in any wardrobe. Both men and women used this trend so as not to clash in the aesthetic field. No one escaped the charm of this piece.

The wider the bell cut, the bolder the one who wore it. The vivid colors and psychedelic prints were taken full advantage of. Even today, they remain a symbol of boldness and style.

Of course, unicolour flared jeans were also used. They could also be made with corduroy fabric instead of cowboy fabric.

Stylize your figure

Macy’s fashion advisor Martha Gil de Montes says the bell-bottom cut on flared jeans flatters the silhouette. In addition, this garment combines very well with narrow-sleeved tops (blouses, sweaters, jackets and blouses).

Without a doubt, these pants are very practical and comfortable. That the pants start from the waist makes the figure more stylized and pronounced.

On the other hand, having the bell cut starting from the knees can make you look taller.  The illusion of height that flared jeans give is accentuated more if you wear them with heels. Thus, everyone will be able to perceive your elongated legs.

To get these 60s pants to really make you shine, you need to know their basic dress rules. Nor can you miss any tip to achieve the perfect combination.

Show them off

There are two basic rules for wearing flared jeans that will help you wear them safely and in style.

  1. They should always be worn with high heels.
  2. They look best with narrow-sleeved tops.

Preferably, the heels should be flat or platform to prevent the hood from bending. If you don’t wear high heels with them, the hood would drag on the ground and not have the movement it should.

Shoes are an important accessory that you should not underestimate. The blouse is the second aspect that adds a lot of points to a good look with flared jeans.

It should have narrow sleeves so that the outfit does not look overloaded. Blouses with wide sleeves or with a lot of fabric take away the prominence of the pants and do not look good.

Adapt them to your body

Your body measurements and height are an influencing factor when it comes to wearing flared jeans. For example, the so-called “elephant feet” are ideal for women with thick legs.

This variation is wide from the top and not from the knees. Thus, thick thighs are concealed and the figure looks more proportionate.

On the other hand, the classic flared cut is perfect for you if your legs are thin. You can wear them tight on the thighs to the knees with confidence and you will have no problems. In fact, these pants look especially good on slim and tall women.

Short and heavier women are recommended to wear flared pants without pockets. The front and back pockets could create an unfavorable visual effect that would make them look plump.

For this same reason, women with pronounced hips should avoid wearing prints and opt for solid-colored pants in dark colors to stylize their figure.

Skinny pants vs. flared jeans

Skinny jeans

In recent years, the trend for flared pants has been overshadowed by skinny or tube cut pants. In fact, whoever still wore this 60s fashion could be called old-fashioned.

The bell cut was gradually displaced. As the years went by, the boot narrowed and everyone got used to the style of skinny pants.  The truth is that fashion goes by cycles, therefore, trends come and go periodically.

Surely, you once tried to mend flared jeans to fit the fashion of skinny pants. Perhaps, you also stopped wearing your favorite pants because no one was accompanying you in that trend.

Now you can rejoice that  the reign of skinny pants is over and you can rekindle your hippie spirit. And while skinny pants are already part of everyday style, flared pants will always have a special place in people’s hearts.
