American Tortillas

This is one of the most popular recipes in the gastronomy of the United States. American omelettes are an easy recipe to make and that will be a perfect breakfast, whether you eat them alone or accompany them with scrambled eggs and bacon. It will also be a spongy surprise for children, for example, on their birthday, you can even invite them to the kitchen to help you prepare them, so we show you how to make this delicious recipe.

The ingredients of American tortillas are very easy to find, as they are used regularly, most likely you have some at home, otherwise a visit to the supermarket is enough so that you can get everything you need to prepare it:

  • 200 grams of wheat flour
  • 250 ml whole milk
  • 4 eggs
  • Half a cup of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Salt

Preparation

  • First, separate the yolks from the whites and reserve them in different containers.
  • In a deep bowl , sift the flour, sugar and salt.  Thus, the lumps fade. When everything is sifted, proceed to create a volcano with a hole in the middle.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave. Afterward, let it cool slightly to room temperature. Add the yolks, milk and melted butter to the inside of the hole of the flour and sugar volcano. You should mix everything very well, ensuring that the sugar crystals are completely dissolved. You should get a homogeneous, smooth and smooth mixture.

  • Then  beat the whites until stiff.  You will know that the whites are ready when you turn the bowl over, no liquid spills and everything looks firm and frothy.
  • Once you have achieved the texture of the whites, you can slowly incorporate them into the mixture. Use a spoon or fork and add the white, making it dissolve inside the mixture. Everything must be very well integrated, otherwise some parts will be spongy and others not.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Grease with margarine and cover the bottom well. Now, with a tablespoon, add a tablespoon or two of the mixture. Try to cover as much of the background as possible. 
  • Now,  wait for it to brown on one side. Then, turn it over, being careful not to break it. Once golden on both sides, remove it from the pan and add batter for another tortilla.
  • Serve them in a stacked plate and with honey, jam or some syrup. Everyone will suck their fingers!

Additional tips

  • If you prefer, you can use skimmed milk for your American tortillas. You can also choose to replace butter with margarine, none of these decisions will affect the final result of the recipe.
  • You will know that the dough of the American tortillas is browning on the other side, because little bubbles will start to appear on the side that is not on the fire.
  • There are very skilled people who flip tortillas by making them jump in the air. However, this takes practice, so if this is your first time with this recipe, better turn it over with the spatula.
