9 Natural Tips To Avoid Swollen Eyelids

Many people wake up each morning with puffy eyelids. For some, the swelling decreases throughout the morning or day, while for others, this swelling lasts all day.

In this article we do not give solutions to deflate the eyelids in the morning, but rather to prevent this from happening. In this way, we will also achieve good habits for our health in general.

We have often heard of natural remedies for puffy eyelids and even bags that appear under the eyes: cucumber slices or raw potato, tea bags, cold masks, etc.

However, to avoid having to always be applying these remedies, there are some tips and good habits that can help us avoid this problem and even improve our night’s rest.

Puffy eyelids give our face a look that we don’t like. However, they also have a positive function, and that is a sign that we have a  fluid retention or lymphatic drainage problem. Thus, we can and must treat it to avoid health problems.

In this article we do not give solutions to deflate the eyelids in the morning, but rather to prevent this from happening. In this way, we will also achieve good habits for our health in general.

Tips to avoid puffy eyelids

1. Control what you eat for dinner

Be careful with dinner

Dinner is the food that we must control the most if we want to avoid swelling in the eyelids and in the body in general, since they are foods that, in general, are not completely digested before going to sleep.

Therefore, the ideal is to have an early and light dinner, so that at least two hours pass before going to bed and eat few calories that we are not going to burn.

2. Reduce salt and dairy

Foods that increase eyelid swelling are those that contain salt and milk and its derivatives. Therefore, we must moderate its consumption, especially at night. These foods, especially salt, retain a lot of fluids.

  • In the case of salt, we can enhance the flavor with spices, vinegar and lemon juice, as well as with sea water that is already sold in some supermarkets, suitable for consumption.

3. Drink lots of water

Drinking water is the best remedy to combat fluid retention and, as a consequence, reduce eyelid swelling. However, for this measure to be effective, we must always drink water on an empty stomach and outside of meals.

4. Some diuretic remedies

Occasionally, or doing rest periods, we can take diuretic infusions to eliminate excess fluids. These infusions can be herbal such as:

  • Horse tail.
  • Hinojo.
  • Dandelion.
  • Nettles.

5. The right pillow

The right pillow

Sometimes, the solution could be as easy as using a pillow a little higher  than, without hurting our neck, helps us raise our head a little more and thus avoid fluid retention in that part. We could also tilt the mattress a bit, if possible.

6. Are we resting well?

Sometimes we can wake up with swollen eyelids due to poor quality of rest : insomnia, waking up during the night, having slept too much or too little, etc.

We must always prioritize night rest, which are the hours that allow us to repair the functions of our body.

7. Remove make-up

If we do not remove make-up correctly, we can increase the swelling of the eyelids even more. We recommend using a make- up remover made with natural ingredients  or a towel moistened with hot water and coconut oil.

  • This second method not only removes makeup, but also deeply hydrates, nourishes and relaxes the skin.

    8. Facial self-massage

Performing a little facial self-massage every day, in the morning or at night, is not only a remedy to avoid fluid retention in the face, but also a habit that helps us relax and have a radiant face.

    9. A dark room

Did you know that sleeping in a room where there is light, no matter how small, prevents a good night’s rest and can worsen the appearance of our face in the morning when we wake up?

Make sure no light enters the room and unplug all nearby electronics. You will be able to feel the benefits of this habit both in your appearance and in the energy when you wake up in the morning.
